There was no band, no ribbon cutting, and no shovel of dirt turned on August 1, 1950. In fact, few people knew on that humid summer morning that a future supply chain logistics industry leader had been born. Jim Kennedy, Jr. and Sam Smartt, Sr. stepped into the American National Bank and deposited the first capital investment of Cherokee Warehouses, Inc. – $25,000 dollars. That modest investment was the beginning of a Chattanooga success story.
In the beginning, public warehousing was the sole focus of the new company. Local accounts were developed, and local manufacturers began storing their wares with Cherokee. Cherokee Material Handling was the first division of Cherokee Warehouses. Selling lift trucks was a logical step for warehousemen, but no one knew at that time how profitable it would become. Later, Kenco would take on the Toyota line of lift trucks and become the premier dealer in several regional areas.
As with any business, the key to success is determining what the future holds. Jim Kennedy, Jr. realized the future of warehousing was in providing contracted warehousing services. Kenco Inc. was formed in 1966 and the industry’s first “contract warehousing agreement” was drafted between Kenco and DuPont (now Invista Fibers with locations in DE, SC, and VA). In addition, Kenco also manages much of DuPont’s P & IP U.S. plastics distribution from the Orange, TX site.
In 1999, nearly a half-century after the story began, Jim Kennedy III and Sam Smartt, Jr. took their family’s heritage and positioned it for future growth. Cherokee Warehouses and Kenco merged to become one of the leading 3PLs. Today, as Kenco celebrates another year in business it is the 8th largest 3PL in the U.S. and the largest woman-owned 3PL in the U.S., with Jane Kennedy Greene serving as the Chairwoman and majority owner. Kenco has continued to diversify its customer base and handles product from most sectors of the manufacturing industry, with a national scope focus. Kenco offers comprehensive warehousing and transportation services in North America and employs 5,000+people.
Dock and Door is Kenco’s natural progression in our successful coverage of the Logistics and Material Handling industries. This division founded in 2014, maintains Kenco’s dedication to Integrity, Quality, and Value. Since then we have doubled each year and currently service Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and we are going coast to coast!
Through it all, the success of Kenco has been based upon people and positive relationships at every level. The Kenco saga continues to be written. It is a story of hard work and dedication. It is a story many have never heard but have been enriched by nonetheless. It is a family history and a legacy to the two young men who began the company more than a half-century ago and whose employees continue to write the greatest chapters that lie ahead.
